Read Guide →The Algarve is Portugal's southern coastal region, stretching 200km along the Atlantic. Famous for dramatic limestone sea cliffs, golden beaches, hidden sea caves and some of Europe's best seafood, it's the country's most popular holiday destination — and for good reason.
June to September is the main beach season with hot dry weather (28–32°C) and calm sea conditions. July and August are peak months — busiest, hottest and most expensive. May and October are the sweet spot: warm (22–26°C), quieter beaches and noticeably lower prices. April is excellent for walking and sightseeing without crowds. November to March is mild (15–18°C), very quiet and perfect for the coastal walking trails — many restaurants close but the authentic Algarve emerges.
A rental car is essential for exploring the Algarve properly — the best beaches are not served by public transport. The EN125 coastal road connects the region east to west. The A22 toll motorway is faster for longer distances (budget €5–10/day in tolls). Car hire in Faro Airport costs €30–60/day in shoulder season, more in August. The Algarve regional train runs along the coast from Vila Real to Lagos but misses most beach access points. Taxis are expensive for multiple trips.
Lagos is the best base for first-time visitors — great beaches nearby, excellent restaurants and a lively but not overwhelming atmosphere. Albufeira suits party-oriented holidays with the most nightlife. Tavira in the east is quieter, more authentic and beautiful — ideal for couples. Sagres on the western tip is the most dramatic and rugged location. Carvoeiro is excellent for families — small, safe and close to Praia da Marinha. Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are the luxury golf resort areas.
Faro Airport (FAO) receives direct flights from most European cities. From Lisbon, trains take 3.5 hours to Faro (€21–35 at cp.pt) — a scenic and comfortable journey. By car from Lisbon it's 2.5 hours on the A2 motorway. From Porto, it's a 4.5-hour drive or 5+ hours by train (change in Lisbon). Several budget airlines fly direct to Faro from London, Manchester, Dublin and most European hubs.
5–7 days is ideal to explore properly. 3 days covers the central highlights — Lagos, Ponta da Piedade, Benagil Cave boat tour and Praia da Marinha. Add 2 days for the eastern Algarve — Tavira, Ria Formosa ferry islands and Cacela Velha. Add 2 more for the wild western coast — Sagres, Cabo de São Vicente and the Atlantic surf beaches. One week gives enough time to find your favourite beach without feeling rushed.
